New Years Opportunities 

Do you make resolutions in January?  I do, but I also know how difficult it is to follow through with them.  Over the years I have found that they can be a positive way to refocus upon a better life.  For me, January is often about exercise.  I tend to slack off as winter begins so its a great opportunity for me to get serious again. I am not an athlete so don’t have to maintain a high level of fitness, but do enjoy being healthy and feeling good.

 

What about you?  Is there some aspect of your life that you want to improve?  Now is a great time to do so.  Remember to use your positive focus to create that inner determination for success.  As a New Year’s gift to you I have created a short hypnosis session that focuses upon New Beginnings. A rare crash at the Milky Way’s core

Astronomers have a front-row seat to observe a mysterious gas cloud spiraling toward our galaxy’s supermassive black hole.
Ok, so why do I include astronomy articles in my hypnosis newsletter? I think it’s important to keep our problems in perspective, and realizing that there are unbelieveable events occuring at unimaginable scales helps us to remember how fortunate we are to just be alive.  So picture this… 
A mysterious gas cloud about three times the mass of Earth is spiraling toward the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way’s core. From our vantage point, the core lies more than 25,000 light-years away in the southern summer sky near the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpius.Astronomers predict the impact will occur in a few months and have never seen anything like this, much less with a front-row seat.

The collision will give astronomers a unique opportunity to see how faint supermassive black holes feed and perhaps why they don’t consume matter in the same way as their brighter counterparts in other galaxies. While black holes themselves are invisible and don’t permit light to escape, the material falling into them shines in X-rays.

It is potentially a unique window into how most black holes in the present-day universe accrete.”  Black holes play a key role in the life cycles of galaxies. “They eat matter from their surroundings and blow matter back. The way they do that influences the evolution of the entire galaxy — how stars are formed, how the galaxy grows, how it interacts with other galaxies,” Degenaar said. “Even more broadly, the way galaxies evolved is important for the evolution of the whole universe, how it came into being, and how it’s changing.”

SUCCESS IN HYPNOSIS DEPENDS ON MOTIVATION, STUDY SUGGESTS

Here’s a new study that reinforces what we have always said, that your success with hypnosis comes down to your wilingness to accept and believe in the suggestions and know that you can make significant changes in your life.

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio – People who are willing and motivated to be hypnotized may be as successful in hypnotherapy as those defined as “hypnotizable” or able to enter “altered states,” new research suggests.

 

In experiments at Ohio State University, scientists found that people with low susceptibility to hypnosis — but told to act highly susceptible to it — were six times more likely to successfully carry out a post-hypnotic suggestion than those who were actually highly susceptible to hypnosis and dissociative experiences.

 

These results suggest that successfully performing post-hypnotic suggestions may have less to do with ease of being hypnotized and more to do with motivation — that is, a person’s willingness to buy into the idea of hypnosis and do what it takes to try to make it work.

 

“It is a skill that people can practice and learn,” Green said. “In fact, our results suggest that the success of hypnotherapy is likely very similar to success in ‘regular’ psychological treatments. If a person is motivated and willing to try out different behaviors and experiences, it’s likely to work.”

 

6 Mistakes That Make You Fat

To start the New Year out right, you have to eat well.  Here are some common mistakes to avoid so that you can get back on track.

 

Cooking Mistake #1: You’re too generous with the olive oil

One tablespoon of olive oil contains 120 calories, so use a paper towel to wipe off any excess oil before adding other ingredients.

Cooking Mistake #2: You forget to spice things up

Woman Seasoning her CookingInstead of covering steamed broccoli in butter, sauces, or cheese, reach for your spice rack. Cover chicken with lemon or orange slices, and sage before baking it in the oven.

Cooking Mistake #3: You bake meat in the oven

Elevate the meat and cook it on a rack. This allows the fat to drain away, Swift says. Do the same with veggies. Toss them with oil, salt, and pepper, then roast on a rack placed atop a baking sheet.

Cooking Mistake #4: You’re “cleaning up” baked goods

People eat larger portions if food is marked “healthy,” so you may snack on four cookies instead of two because your new recipe contains half the fat—but this defeats the entire purpose.

Cooking Mistake #5: You are, well, cooking everything

Don’t forget to eat veggies raw, too. Your body burns more calories by simply digesting raw foods, which could translate into weight loss.

Cooking Mistake #6: You think pasta was made for noodles

Couple Cooking and Tasting FoodThink spaghetti squash, zucchini and squash ribbons, and sliced asparagus. Want proof? One cup of spaghetti squash contains 42 calories compared with one cup of pasta at 200 calories. Top veggie “noodles” with a tomato sauce and turkey meatballs and you’ve got a lower-carb and lower-calorie (but still satisfying) meal.

 

 

 

 

 Risk of supervolcano eruption far greater than thought, scientists say

 

 

Again, under the heading of fascinating natural occurrences and things-that-we-hope-never-happen-in-our-lifetime, this is something that as a former geologist I do keep my eye on, for it will happen again.

 

Scientists have analysed the molten rock within the dormant supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park and found that eruption is possible without any external trigger

 

The eruption of a “supervolcano” hundreds of times more powerful than conventional volcanoes – with the potential to wipe out civilisation as we know it – is more likely than previously thought, a study has found.

 

An analysis of the molten rock within the dormant supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park in the United States has revealed that an eruption is possible without any external trigger, scientists said. 

Scientists previously believed many supervolcanic eruptions needed earthquakes to break open the Earth’s crust so magma could escape. But new research suggests that this can happen as a result of the build-up of pressure.

 

Supervolcanoes represent the second most globally cataclysmic event – next to an asteroid strike – and they have been responsible in the past for mass extinctions, long-term changes to the climate and shorter-term “volcanic winters” caused  by volcanic ash cutting out the sunligh

 

There have been approximately 20 supervolcanic eruptions in the last 2 million years, averaging one every 100,000 years.

 

The last known supervolcanic eruption was believed to have occurred about 70,000 years ago at the site today of Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia. It caused a volcanic winter that blocked out the sun for between six to eight years, and resulted in a period of global cooling lasting a thousand years.

 

A supervolcano under Yellowstone Park in Wyoming last erupted about 600,000 years ago, sending more than 1,000 cubic kilometres of ash and lava into the atmosphere – similarly affecting the earth as did the Lake Toba supervolcano.

Summer ideas and photographic proof of session success

Ready for Summer?

Sharing thoughts of the summer.

What do you have planned this summer?  Are you traveling out of state or just want to enjoy areas closer to home?  There are many fantastic places to explore.  Maybe you like going to the mountains, or the beach, or concerts, or wine tasting.  So many things to do.  One of my favorite ways to relax is sitting on a Lake Tahoe beach and enjoying a good book!  Or spending time at the ocean camping amongst the dunes. So many choices for hiking, kayaking, or just exploring mountain lakes.Another great idea is traveling farther afield to beautiful places like Zion National Park in southwest Utah (only a 12 hour drive away)

As you know, I always ask for you to give me a special place in nature to take you during your hypnosis sessions.  I have heard you describe many relaxing and inspiring places in the foothills and the mountains nearby, reminding me that there are always new horizons and unexplored gems just waiting to be discovered.  Maybe I’ll see you there!

Aloha Lake 

Here’s another great idea for a day hike. Near the summit of Hwy 50 before dropping into the Lake Tahoe basin, you will discover an easy hike that is reached after the fun Echo Lake boat trip. Or hike the trail around the lakes if you are afraid of boats and water (come see me if you are).

Eagle Lake

My favorite recommendation for a short, beautiful hike in the Sierras is Eagle Lake. Located above the magnificent arm of Lake Tahoe called Emerald Bay, this hike is just one mile and doesn’t take long at all.  It is a spectacular little mountain lake for swimming or just relaxing.  Great views of Lake Tahoe from the trail, and be sure to see the impressive waterfall across the road from the trailhead that spills down into Emerald Bay.

Ready for Spring?

What exactly is Spring?

At 4:02 AM, March 20, Spring began with the vernal equinox.   The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.

We owe this to the 23.4  tilt of the Earth’s axis. Because of the tilt, we receive the Sun’s rays most directly in the summer. In the winter, when we are tilted away from the Sun, the rays pass through the atmosphere at a greater slant, bringing lower temperatures.  During the vernal and autumnal equinox the sun is moving north or south across the earth’s equator projected into space.

 

If the Earth rotated on an axis perpendicular to the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, there would be no variation in day lengths or temperatures throughout the year, and we would not have seasons.  

History shows that people have recognized the vernal equinox for thousands of years. There is no shortage of rituals and traditions surrounding the coming of spring. Many early peoples celebrated for the basic reason that their food supplies would soon be restored. The date is significant in Christianity because Easter al ways falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. It is also probably no coincidence that early Egyptians built the Great Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising Sun on the day of the vernal equinox.

 Are you ready for Spring?

Winter is coming to an end.  Less than a month from now, the sun will cross the celestial equator on its way north, ushering in a time of warmth and outdoor activity.

Are you ready for this new year?  What hopes and dreams do you want to manifest?

I work with many that are struggling to find their place in life. To eat better, overcome old habits, release limiting phobias and beliefs.

As you reflect upon your vision for a great year, remember to focus upon what it is you do want and release what you don’t want.  When you place your thoughts upon an exciting future, you continue to program your subconscious mind upon a new and better chapter of your life.

Scanning for Anti-Oxidants

Still interested in doing a scan to find out the level of antioxidants in your skin?  We will offer another one in a few weeks. As an experiment, my first reading was 30,000, and after using the antioxidant vitamins for 30 days my readings rose to a value of 38,000.  I ate the same amount of fresh fruit and vegetables, so the vitamins are most probably the reason for the increase.  I will let you know how my value changes with our next scan.  If you wish to take part in the scan, be looking for an email from me about the upcoming date, Only a few spots are available.

New Years Resolution for Weight Loss

New Year’s resolutions fail because of the math, not a lack of magic or will power.

Studies show that less than 10% of the mind is conscious.

You have at most 10% of your mind to act with logic and reason, while 90% of your mind runs entirely on subconscious programming.

Without making changes in the 90% that is the subconscious mind, no human can endure lasting change with less than 10% effort.

You must act with your whole mind for true change to occur.

Studies about the Benefits of Hypnosis

According to Bruce Lipton, Cellular Biologist, your subconscious mind accounts for over 90% of the power of your mind,  You will remain stuck in old behaviors if you don’t learn how to use your mind to your benefit. where you are right now.

He also states that our subconscious mind is a programmable bio-computer with the computer being the ‘hardware’ and your beliefs are the ‘software.’

A good analogy is that the conflict between your conscious and subconscious mind is like driving your car with one foot on the accelerator and a heavier one on the brake.

Hypnosis to Stop Smoking – Classic Studies

Largest Study Ever: Hypnosis 3 Times as Effective as Patch and 15 Times as Effective as Willpower.

Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. A meta-analysis, statistically combining results of more than 600 studies of 72,000 people from America and Europe to compare various methods of quitting. On average, hypnosis was over three times as effective as nicotine replacement methods and 15 times as effective as trying to quit alone.

Hypnosis for Weight Loss – Classic Studies

The Effects of Hypnosis in Weight Loss for 60 Females, at Least 20% Overweight

Treatment included group hypnosis with metaphors for ego-strengthening, decision making and motivation, ideomotor exploration in individual hypnosis, and group hypnosis with maintenance suggestions. Hypnosis was more effective than a control group: an average of 17 lbs lost by the hypnosis group vs. an average of 0.5 lbs lost by the control group, on follow-up.

Hypnosis Subjects Lost More Weight Than 90% of Others and Kept it Off

Researchers analyzed 18 studies comparing a cognitive behavioral therapy such as relaxation training, guided imagery, self monitoring, or goal setting with the same therapy supplemented by hypnosis.

Those who received the hypnosis lost more weight than 90 percent of those not receiving hypnosis and maintained the weight loss two years after treatment ended.
